Making contact

This weekend I did something I've talked about doing for many years, yet never got around to doing. Part of the reason for not doing it is because it involves present owners and residents of properties they will know as 'home'. Firstly, I didn't want to be intrusive in any way; we all know how irritating it can be to get a letter addressed to "The Home Owner" or "The Occupier". If you're like me you'll most likely take one look and deposit the envelope straight in the bin, or run it through the shredder if your address is on it. Another reason for not reaching out is because a lot of people may not believe - like me - or they may have experienced things but are not willing to talk about them. Having someone ask them questions about those experiences may open up a whole can of worms for them. However, curiosity got the better of me and I drafted letters to five different people at four different properties. Earlier today I remembered another so will be popping a letter in the post to them this evening. At the end of the day the recipients have the option to dump straight in the bin, shred, ignore, or maybe, just maybe, share an experience they have had whilst residing in the properties.

One of them is an old Victorian house - actually two of them are - which houses multiple apartments. I know of this block because I lived in two of the apartments. The guy I was living with at the time had lived in two others in the same block before I moved in. I, personally experienced things in our first apartment there, things which I still, to this day, cannot explain. When visiting one day my Mum saw something too, as did several other people who visited. All of those I could come up with a rational explanation for, but I am hoping that out of all the residents I have contacted, someone from that building will reach out. If they were to tell me something I had experienced there it may go some way to convincing me a little. Not a lot, but a little. I never told anyone about the things I saw or felt whilst living there and when I have talked about them since I've not let on where the experiences happened, so if someone new, someone almost thirty years after I left has had something similar happen it could blow my mind a little.

Of course I would love to hear back from all the people; I'd love them to tell me something I have been told before by another person, but I fear I may not hear back from any. I have faith in people though and will remain positive for as long as possible. I will absolutely be sharing with you as I have explained to the residents that I will not be keeping anything they tell me to myself, however, I will not now, nor ever, share where these properties are located. The could be a cottage in the depths of a hidden valley in Wales, a houseboat moored alongside a pub on the broads of Norfolk, or on a normal looking street in any number of London boroughs. I will not share any names either; just their stories.

I only posted them on Saturday and with second-class postage (I'm not made of money) so it will most likely be the weekend at the earliest they will be received. From this Saturday onwards for a few weeks though each time phones pings with a new email I will be opening up my mailbox with a large sense of excitement.

As an aside - and probably what actually got me round to finally setting up this site and contacting the residents - I came across a new podcast last week. Called "How Haunted" it's worth a listen to if you're looking for some ghostly tales. Personally, for me, it's a little too "Most Haunted" in the way they investigate supposed haunted locations - the host does also use a couple of Most Haunted references which is a little off-putting to me - however, he also shares a little history of the places he's discussing and that in itself makes for interesting listening. I feel you should add it to your 'listen list'.
